After changing hands back in 2009 and undergoing extensive renovation, those who have a love of fine Yarra Valley wines and boutique vineyards will be pleased to know Morgan Vineyards is again producing wine and will soon be open again to the public.
The first vines were planted in 1971 making Morgan Vineyards one of the oldest vineyards in the Yarra Valley.
For new owners Simon and Michele Gunther, it was love at first sight. Simon first sited the property on the Thursday, Michele inspected on the Friday, then together with their son Samuel, returned on the Saturday and bought it then and there. “It was the view that got us, it looks straight across the valley to the gap between Mount Donna Buang and Mount Little Joe,” said Michele. It is also the view that was the inspiration for the Morgan’s logo.
The couple spent the next two years renovating the property and learning about the vineyard. During this period Simon and Michele chose to sell their grapes and despite there being an over supply of grapes in the Yarra Valley, their grapes were highly sought after and were snapped up by adjoining vineyards, who went on to produce some award winning wines.
Having been told what excellent old vines they had bought and being constantly asked when they would again be producing wine, by 2012 Simon and Michele felt it was time to once again produce wine under the Morgan’s label.
Michele and Simon are quick to tell everyone how privileged they feel to own such a lovely property, with such highly regarded old vines and give full credit to the former owners Roger and Ally Morgan, with whom have formed an excellent and ongoing friendship.
Simon and Michele have a simple philosophy towards their winery business. “If you take great grapes, from great vines and put them in the hands of a great wine maker, you should end up with a great product.” This year will see the release of their 2012 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, two varieties that the Yarra Valley is well known for.
2014 will see the full release of all four varieties produced on the estate. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet, Merlot.
Morgan Vineyards cellar door is open by appointment or Friday, Saturday and Sundays 11-5pm.
