FLOWER FARMING IN HEALESVILLE HAS UNEARTHED AN ARTISTIC SIDE IN HORTICULTURIST ANNIE FIELD

When Annie Field and Michael Smith first moved to their Healesville property nine years ago, they couldn’t imagine it would one day be bursting with colour. Back then, the block was overshadowed by trees and towering pittosporums, and their garden started as a modest patch of vegetables for the family table.
“It’s a long, north-facing block, just short of an acre, hence the name Shortacre Farm,” Annie says. “Once we cleared the pittosporums, the block opened right up. Now it gets12 hours of really good sun, and being on the floodplain keeps the soil beautifully rich.”
